Wi-Fi network intruders can come from multiple places. It’s your not-so-scrupulous neighbor who tries to hop on your Wi-Fi. Your visiting nephew who has unleashed a virus via his mobile gaming device. Or, one of your many Smart Home devices have been hacked and now your whole network is at risk.
All good reasons to set up a guest network.
What makes a guest network more secure?
Guest Wi-Fi networks provide a separate internet access point on your router from the private network you use for your primary devices. By creating that separate entry point, you’re protecting your own private network.
Why is this important?
An unsecured network can easily be accessed by your neighbors—and who knows what they may be downloading or uploading via your network. You probably don’t have access to all the laptops and mobile phones that visitors bring into your house, nor what viruses these devices may contain. It would be terrible if you were trying to protect your home with a Smart alarm or smoke detector and found it was hacked.
Creating a guest network allows your visitors to connect to the internet without offering them the opportunity to accidentally spread any viruses or malware they may have on their devices across the network to infect your devices.
How do I set up a guest network?
As a rule, setting up a guest network is as simple as logging into your router, enabling the Wi-Fi option, and defining the SSID (the name of the guest network you’re creating). You’ll also need to create a password for the guests to use—and we generally recommend restricting access to the internet only.
If you subscribe to Bloomer Telephone Company’s managed Wi-Fi service, you can set up a guest network via the Command IQ mobile app.
Simply select Guest Network from the main menu and you’ll have the option to “Add a Guest Network” by selecting the plus sign. From there, you simply need to fill in the details that you would like to apply to the network. In the future, selecting this Guest Network from the main screen will allow you to edit or delete it, or send the details to additional guests.
