Memorial Day is a time we get to honor and remember those who fought for our freedom that we so graciously get to embrace. Not only is this a time to gather around with family and friends, but it is also a time of reflection, gratitude and tribute. Memorial Day is an important American holiday because it brings forth a time of celebration to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives, so that we can enjoy the fruits of freedom.

What is the history behind Memorial Day?

Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971. It originated in the years following the Civil War; however, it is not dedicated specifically to one triumph or battle in American history. During the time of the Civil War, the United States found itself involved with various other conflicts. Because of this, Memorial Day evolved to honor all fallen soldiers that fought for American freedom.

How can we celebrate Memorial Day?

Memorial Day can be celebrated in many ways.  We can commemorate the day by taking a moment of silence to reflect on the sacrifices that were made for our freedom. We can also honor our loved ones by expressing gratitude and giving thanks in whatever way feels more meaningful to us. For those who have loved ones that lost their lives in the battle for our freedom, many visit the memorials of those who are no longer with us.

Because there was a price to pay for freedom, we know that every day is a gift. So, no matter how you celebrate this time, give thanks for freedom, sacrifice and strength.
